How much is a taxi from Geneva Airport to Chamonix?

Geneva is the gateway to the Mont Blanc massif rather than a destination most of our passengers are heading for, and Chamonix is the journey this airport is really about. The resort sits at the head of the Arve valley, reached from the airport by the Autoroute Blanche. The Chamonix tourist office puts the airport 88 kilometres from the resort; the quote above measures the road to the address you actually give us, which is rarely the middle of the village.

Our price is agreed when you book and does not move afterwards. A rank car is metered instead, and the canton's flat airport fares are the thing to understand before you join the queue: they stop at the cantonal boundary. Chamonix is in France, so no flat fare covers it, and the meter switches to the higher of the two cantonal scales the moment the journey is bound for a destination outside the canton.

The road itself is the reason the winter and summer journeys are not the same journey. The motorway climbs the Arve valley and then leaves it for the valley floor at Les Houches and Chamonix, and from the first of November to the thirty-first of March French law requires winter equipment on vehicles using the mountain communes. Saturday is changeover day across the Alps, and the motorway operator's own figures for the winter holidays are not subtle about what that does to the run.

Where a booked car earns its keep here is luggage, a party, a late landing and an address that is not the middle of Chamonix. Two people travelling light in daylight have cheaper options and we would rather set them out below than let you find them afterwards.

Where do I meet my driver at Geneva?

  1. Clear the hall and come out to the Arrivals level. That is where Genève Aéroport puts the taxi rank and where your driver will be, and if you have landed in the France Sector you can leave to either country by following the signs off the aircraft.
  2. Contact your driver as soon as you land, their number is in your supplier details email. It arrives separately from the booking confirmation, so save it to your phone before you fly.
  3. Express pick-up is included in the price you paid: the driver waits at the airport's designated pick-up point rather than inside the hall. Being met in the arrivals hall with a name board is meet and greet, a paid extra you add at checkout.
  4. Do not join the rank queue by mistake. The official taxis wait outside the Arrivals level at their own designated rank, and the airport publishes no separate named meeting point for pre-booked cars, so your driver will tell you exactly where to walk.
  5. Your flight is tracked at no charge, and your booking carries 60 minutes free waiting after your flight lands, which matters more here than at most airports because a delayed ski arrival still has a mountain road in front of it.

Rank, ride-hail, drop-off and the facts that move the meter

The canton's flat airport fares stop at the border

Geneva sets maximum flat fares from the airport, 25 francs for the area next to it, 35 francs to the international organisations, 50 francs to the right bank and 60 francs to the left bank. Every one of those zones is inside the canton. A resort in France or a village in the Valais is outside them, and is charged on the per-kilometre scale instead.

(République et canton de Genève, Police du commerce et de lutte contre le travail au noir, checked 16 September 2026)

Leaving the canton puts the meter on the higher tariff

Article 32 of the cantonal regulation sets Tarif I at 3,20 francs a kilometre by day and Tarif II at 3,80. Tarif II is not only a night and Sunday rate: it also applies whenever more than three passengers are carried, and whenever the journey is picked up at or bound for a destination outside the cantonal boundary. A ski transfer is both of those things on most Saturdays.

(République et canton de Genève, Règlement d'exécution de la loi sur les taxis et les voitures de transport avec chauffeur (RTVTC), checked 16 September 2026)

The airport pick-up charge is higher than the town one

The same article sets the pick-up charge at 6,30 francs normally and 7,80 francs when the journey starts at the airport. Skis and cases are charged too, at 1,50 francs for each case of 5 to 30 kilogrammes or each pair of skis, which is a line worth reading before a family unloads a rank car.

The free arrivals ticket no longer exists

Genève Aéroport used to hand arriving passengers a free ticket on the unireso network, and a great deal of advice written before 2022 still says so. The airport's own answer is that the offer was discontinued on 1 January 2022. The replacement is a zone 10 ticket at 3,00 francs, valid for 60 minutes, that you buy like anybody else.

(Genève Aéroport, checked 16 September 2026)

Nobody may collect you at the drop-off area

Kiss and Fly on the Departures level is free and it is for dropping off only. The airport states that parking there is not permitted even briefly and that passenger pick-up is not permitted in that area at all, directing anyone collecting an arrival to a car park. If a friend has offered to meet you there, they cannot.

(Genève Aéroport, checked 16 September 2026)

Winter equipment is a legal requirement, not advice

From 1 November to 31 March, in the mountain communes listed by prefectural order, every vehicle with four or more wheels must carry chains or snow socks for at least two drive wheels or run four winter tyres. Thirty-four departments are covered and roadside signs mark each zone. Your supplier's car is equipped for it; a hire car collected at the airport may not be.

(République française, Service-Public.fr (Direction de l'information légale et administrative), checked 16 September 2026)

Saturday is not the same road as Tuesday

ATMB, which runs the Autoroute Blanche, says that during the winter holidays traffic on it is multiplied by three from Friday to Sunday, with 80 000 vehicles carried on a Saturday. That is the day most ski weeks change over. A fixed price does not care how long the queue at Cluses is, and a meter does.

Geneva taxi questions

How much is a taxi from Geneva Airport to Chamonix?

Our price is quoted live on this page and fixed once you book. From the rank it is metered, and the tariff is the higher one: Article 32 of the cantonal regulation puts Tarif II at 3,80 francs a kilometre and applies it to any journey bound for a destination outside the canton, on top of a 7,80 franc airport pick-up charge. The canton's flat airport fares, 25 to 60 francs, only cover zones inside the cantonal boundary, so none of them reaches Chamonix.

Is there a bus from Geneva Airport to Chamonix?

Yes. The international Geneva to Pays du Mont-Blanc line is run by SAT Mont-Blanc and Borini under the Flixbus S500 brand, calls at Genève Aéroport and runs direct to Chamonix Sud all year, with fares from 19,00 euros. Tickets have to be bought online before departure. Connections at Sallanches on the Cars Région network reach the other Mont Blanc resorts.

Can I get from Geneva Airport to Chamonix by train?

Yes, in two legs. The airport's SBB/CFF station is very close to the terminal, a five minute walk from both the Departures and the Arrivals levels, and the cross-border Léman Express runs from it to Saint-Gervais-les-Bains-le-Fayet. From there the SNCF Mont-Blanc Express serves every village up the valley, Servoz, Les Houches, Chamonix, Argentière and Vallorcine, and carries on to Martigny. It is a good journey with hand luggage and a slow one with a ski bag and a toddler.

Do I get a free transport ticket when I land at Geneva Airport?

Not any more, and this is the single most out of date thing on the internet about this airport. The airport's own FAQ states that the free unireso bus and train ticket for arriving passengers was discontinued on 1 January 2022. You now buy a zone 10 ticket at 3,00 francs, valid for 60 minutes, the same as anybody else. If you are staying in a Geneva hotel or hostel you get a Geneva Transport Card instead, free and emailed three days before arrival.

Where do I meet my driver at Geneva Airport?

At the airport's designated pick-up point on the Arrivals level. Genève Aéroport publishes no separate named meeting point for pre-booked cars, so ring your driver on the number in your supplier details email as soon as you are on the ground and they will tell you exactly where to walk. Express pick-up of that kind is included; being met inside the hall with a name board is meet and greet, a paid extra at checkout.

Can someone pick me up at the drop-off area outside?

No. Kiss and Fly on the Departures level is free but it is a drop-off area only, and the airport states that passenger pick-up is not permitted there at all and that parking, even briefly, is not allowed. Anyone collecting an arriving passenger is directed into one of the airport car parks instead.

What is the French Sector at Geneva Airport?

It is a part of the airport on the French side of the border. If you land on a France Sector flight you arrive directly in it and can leave to either France or Switzerland by following the signs off the aircraft, and your bag comes out on the France Sector carousel before being sent on to the main one if you do not collect it. Road access is only by the customs road at Ferney-Voltaire, and you cannot walk or cycle between the sectors.

Do I need snow chains for a transfer to the Alps?

Not you, but the vehicle does. Between 1 November and 31 March, in the mountain communes listed by prefectural order, every vehicle with four or more wheels must carry chains or snow socks for at least two drive wheels or run four winter tyres. Thirty-four departments are covered and signs mark each zone. Your supplier's car is equipped for it, which is the difference between a transfer and a hire car collected at the terminal.

How long does the transfer take in winter compared with summer?

Allow considerably longer on a Saturday between December and April. ATMB, which runs the Autoroute Blanche, says traffic on it is multiplied by three from Friday to Sunday during the winter holidays and that 80 000 vehicles use it on a Saturday. Snow, an accident or a chain check adds to that. Our price is agreed before you travel and does not change if the road does.

Are motorway tolls and the Mont Blanc tunnel included in the price?

Yes, whatever the route needs is in the fare you agreed. For scale: ATMB prices Le Fayet to Scientrier on the Autoroute Blanche at 4,80 euros for a car from 1 February 2026, and a single crossing of the Mont Blanc tunnel from France to Italy at 55,50 euros from 1 January 2026. The tunnel figure is the one that surprises people booking Courmayeur.

How many of us fit in one vehicle?

A saloon takes three passengers and three standard suitcases, an estate four, a people carrier five, and the largest vehicle we quote eight. Ski and board bags count as luggage, and in the Alps they usually decide the vehicle rather than the boot arrangement, so tell us about them when you book. Child seats are available on request.

What if my flight is late, and can I cancel?

We track the flight and move the pick-up to the real landing time at no extra charge, and the free waiting window included in your fare starts when the aircraft lands. Cancel more than 24 hours before pick-up and you pay nothing; inside 24 hours the booking is charged in full. Payment is online by card when you book, for the whole vehicle rather than per seat.

How far ahead do I need to book a transfer from Geneva Airport?

At least 24 hours before your pick-up. We can't take bookings at shorter notice here. If you have just landed and need a car now, the airport taxi rank is the quickest option.
