Rome Ciampino Airport to Rome city centre taxi

From £68.73 fixed for a pre-booked saloon to Rome city centre.

Ciampino sits on Via Appia Nuova, beside the ring road. Everything leaving the airport uses the same short run of road towards the city, so the choice here is really about luggage, the hour you land, how many of you there are, and where in Rome you are actually sleeping.

What the fixed price includes

How much is a taxi from Rome Ciampino Airport to the city centre?

Rome does something most European capitals do not. Instead of leaving the airport run on the meter, the city fixes one all-inclusive figure for a direct journey between Ciampino and any address inside the Aurelian Walls. That figure is per car rather than per person, it already contains the luggage and night supplements, and it covers motorway tolls. It is set by Roma Capitale, not by the driver, and the airport reprints it on its own taxi page.

The catch is the boundary, and it is a real one. Roma Capitale does not define the Aurelian Walls as a monument. It defines them as a named list of streets running clockwise from Piazzale Flaminio, through Termini, round past Porta Maggiore and Porta San Sebastiano, along the river at Testaccio, out over Trastevere to Via Gregorio VII and back across Prati. The airport itself is nowhere near that line, so the only end that matters is your Rome address. If it falls inside, the flat fare applies. If it falls outside, the flat fare does not exist for your journey and a rank car goes on the meter, with a separate airport minimum sitting underneath it.

That is where most of the confusion on this route comes from. A traveller reads the flat figure on the airport's page, books nothing, lands at midnight, gives an address in the southern suburbs or out near the ring road, and is charged something else entirely, correctly. None of the city's discounts help either: they are explicitly switched off for any journey starting or ending at an airport.

Our price works the other way round. It is quoted for the exact address you type in, before you pay, and it does not care which side of a line drawn in 2006 the address falls on. It does not move if the road is slow, which matters more at Ciampino than the distance suggests, because Rome's meter charges for time as well as distance once the traffic drops below walking-out-of-town speed. The car is sized to the party when you book, so a family of five is not a negotiation at the kerb.

We would rather be straight about when not to book. If you are up to four people with luggage that fits one car, landing in daylight, going to a hotel inside the Walls and happy to queue, the flat fare from the rank is the cheaper answer and you should take it. The cheapest ways into Rome are cheaper still, and they are set out below with their fares and their running times. Read the hours on the cheapest row of all before you rely on it: that one runs to a short list of departures spread across the middle of the day, and it is the reason the second-cheapest option is usually the useful one here.

Where do I meet my driver at Rome Ciampino?

  1. Clear customs, follow the signs to Arrivals, and stay on that side of the building. The airport puts the public taxi rank at the Arrivals Terminal, and that is the side your driver will be waiting on as well.
  2. Contact your driver as soon as you land, their number is in your supplier details email. It arrives separately from your booking confirmation, so save it to your phone before you fly.
  3. Express pick-up is included in the price you paid: the driver waits at the airport's designated pick-up point rather than inside the hall. Aeroporti di Roma publishes no fixed meeting point for pre-booked cars at Ciampino, which is exactly why the call matters here. Being met in the arrivals hall with a name board is meet and greet, a paid extra you add at checkout.
  4. Do not join the rank queue by mistake, and ignore anyone approaching you inside the terminal with an offer of a ride. The airport warns in writing that vehicles other than the white, roof-signed, licence-numbered taxis at the rank may be driven by people with no valid permit.
  5. Your flight is tracked at no charge, and your booking carries 60 minutes free waiting after your flight lands, so a slow bag belt does not cost you the car.
