When not to book us: Obergurgl is the one corridor on this hub where we would not push anybody towards the scheduled option. The valley services are good, they run every half hour from Oetztal-Bahnhof, and for a solo traveller in September they are far cheaper than anything with a driver in it. But the Oetztal is sixty five kilometres long, Obergurgl is at the very top of it at 1,930 metres, and a journey that starts with a hop to the valley mouth and ends with a climb through Soelden and Zwieselstein is a long afternoon with a ski bag. The resort's own tourist board makes the same point in its own way, listing shuttle services and taxi firms that run from the airport terminal straight to the hotel rather than leading with the timetable. Where a booked car is worth the money is the ordinary Gurgl arrival: four people, boot bags, a flight landing after dark in January, and an address that is ski in and ski out and therefore nowhere near a stop on a through road. Where it is not worth it is one person with hand luggage in summer, and we would say so.

Where you meet your driver

  1. Name the hotel, and say whether it stands in Obergurgl or in Hochgurgl. The two sit on the same road with 200 metres of height between them, and a car sent to the lower one at the end of a travel day costs you a climb you have already paid to make once.
  2. The arrangement here is made on the phone, because Innsbruck publishes no fixed meeting point for pre-booked cars. Walk out of arrivals to the front of the terminal, then follow what your driver tells you rather than joining anything that looks like a queue.
  3. Keep the number within reach before you fly. It reaches you in the supplier details email rather than the booking confirmation. That matters more on this run than on a short hop, because there is no easy second option waiting at the top of the valley.
  4. The fare covers express pick-up, which puts the driver at the airport's designated pick-up point rather than inside the building. A name board waiting for you in the arrivals hall is meet and greet, and that is a paid extra added at checkout.
  5. The motorway toll and the winter equipment sit with the operator. ASFINAG charges for Austrian motorways by vignette rather than at a barrier, and Austrian law requires winter tyres or chains on this sort of road in wintry conditions between 1 November and 15 April. Neither is added to your fare afterwards.

Contact your driver as soon as you land, their number is in your supplier details email.

Arrivals-hall meet and greet with a name board is available as a paid extra at checkout.

Questions people ask about this route

How much is a taxi from Innsbruck Airport to Obergurgl?

You see the live price above, and booking holds it there. Nothing meters this journey: the Innsbruck tariff is written for the city and stops where the city does, so a run to the head of the Oetztal is agreed with the driver instead. The nearest published benchmark is the airport's guide sheet, which gives Obergurgl at 220 euros, Hochgurgl at 230 euros and Soelden at 200 euros, and cautions that luggage and passenger numbers move the figure. That guide figure is for the whole car, and on recent quotes it has sat close to our price, so compare the two on the day before you choose.

How high is Obergurgl?

The tourist board puts Obergurgl at 1,930 metres above sea level, ringed by three thousand metre peaks, and Hochgurgl a further 200 metres above that. That altitude is the reason the resort is described as snow sure, and it is also the reason a January transfer is a different proposition from the same journey in July.

Is there a train to Obergurgl?

Only as far as the valley mouth. The station is Oetztal-Bahnhof, which the tourist board says has daily direct connections, and from there public transport lines run up the valley at 30 minute intervals. Obergurgl itself is at the head of a 65 km side valley and has no railway at all, which is why the last part of the journey is always a road one.

How far is Obergurgl from Innsbruck Airport?

The tourist board gives Innsbruck Airport as around 50 km from the entrance to the Oetztal, and then the valley itself runs 65 km to its head. In practice the drive out of Innsbruck is the quick part and the climb through Soelden and Zwieselstein is the part that decides how long the transfer takes.

What is the weather like in the Oetztal?

Drier than most people expect. The tourist board places the valley in the dry inner alpine area, sheltered by the surrounding ranges, and gives average annual precipitation as around 830 mm at Gurgl and only 675 mm at Vent. The valley carries five separate climatic zones over its length, from orchards at the mouth to glaciers at the top.

Are there shuttle services from the airport to Obergurgl?

Yes. The tourist board lists shuttle services and taxi companies that run from Innsbruck Airport or the railway station directly to hotels in Obergurgl-Hochgurgl, and says the Oetztal Shuttle can be booked from the airport terminal itself. They run on the operator's schedule rather than on your flight, which is the difference between them and what we quote here.

Do I need winter tyres or chains for this road?

The vehicle does, and a licensed local operator will have the right equipment on it. Austrian law between 1 November and 15 April allows a car in wintry conditions only with winter tyres on all wheels, or with chains on at least two driven wheels where the road is under a continuous layer of snow or ice, and coaches must carry chains through the same period. The rule follows the state of the road rather than the date, which on a climb of this kind can change within the same journey.

Is the Austrian motorway toll included?

Yes. Austria charges for motorway use with a vignette rather than at barriers, and ASFINAG prices a car vignette at 9,60 euros for a day, 12,80 euros for ten days and 106,80 euros for a year. Your fare was agreed before the journey and the toll is not added to it afterwards.

Can you carry skis and boot bags for four?

Yes, with notice at booking. Capacities are fixed: saloon three passengers and three standard suitcases, estate four passengers and three suitcases, people carrier five passengers and four suitcases, eight seater eight of each. Ski bags count as luggage, so four adults with full kit for a week at Gurgl is a people carrier rather than a saloon, and telling us at the time of booking is what makes that happen.

What happens if my flight is delayed, and can I cancel?

We track the flight at no charge and move the pick-up to the real landing time, so book for the scheduled arrival rather than padding it, and the free waiting window included in your fare starts when the aircraft lands. Nothing is charged if you cancel more than 24 hours ahead of pick-up, and the full fare is due inside that window. Payment is online by card at booking and covers the whole vehicle.
