When not to book us: Benalmádena is the pair on this coast where the cheap option and the convenient one are furthest apart, and it is worth being blunt about why. The railway is excellent: 18 minutes from the airport, a fare that starts at 0,62 euros on a Consorcio card, trains through most of the day. It stops at Arroyo de la Miel and Torremuelle, and Arroyo de la Miel is up the hill and inland from almost everywhere visitors actually stay. Puerto Marina, the beach hotels along the Avenida Antonio Machado and Benalmádena Pueblo above them are each a separate leg once the train has done its bit, uphill in the last case. So the honest split is this. Alone, hand luggage, staying near the station, take the train and do not think twice. Two or more of you with hold luggage heading for the marina or the pueblo, and the fare you save goes straight back out on the local leg while you drag cases through a station car park. That is what the fixed price is buying here: not speed, which the railway wins, but the elimination of a second journey at the end of a flight.
