When not to book us: If there are two of you with cabin bags and you have landed in daylight, the minibus east is the cheaper answer and we will not pretend otherwise. The municipal transport company runs both ends of it, the Antalya terminal and the Manavgat one, and the airport itself lists Side and Manavgat among the places that terminal serves. The catch is geography rather than money. The terminal is 4 km north of Antalya city centre, so the journey starts with getting across a city you have just flown into. The trunk road runs inland, behind the resorts rather than through them, and it puts you down at Manavgat, which the directorate places 5 km short of Side. That last 5 km is the one nobody budgets for, and it is the one you are doing at the end with the cases. Cabin bags is not an idle condition either: the airport describes these as the minibuses that work inside Antalya province, and hold luggage for four people is more than one of them is built to swallow. Where the car is worth the difference is an address on the peninsula or in the strip either side of it, a family with hold luggage, or a flight that gets in after dark. It is also worth it if your booking says Side and your hotel is really at Manavgat, or the other way about, because a driver with the hotel name gets that right and a timetable cannot.

Where you meet your driver

  1. Put the hotel name and the district on the booking rather than the word Side. The directorate places Side itself out on the peninsula at Selimiye, 5 km from Manavgat, and the two are separate destinations to a driver even though they share a postal district.
  2. Ring your driver as soon as you land. Their number is in the supplier details email, which comes separately from the booking confirmation, so save it to your phone before you fly out.
  3. The taxi ranks sit directly in front of the arrival exits at every terminal, so the first queue you see is not yours. Keep walking to the designated pick-up point your driver names.
  4. Express pick-up is what your fare includes: the driver waits at the airport's designated pick-up point. Meeting you inside the hall with a name board is meet and greet, and that is a paid extra at checkout.

Is there a coach from Antalya Airport to Side?

The provincial directorate places Side 5 km south west of Manavgat, out on a peninsula at Selimiye, a village settled by Cretan immigrants in 1900. Manavgat is the working town inland. The Antalya to Mersin trunk road east out of the city. The directorate puts Serik 38 km along it and Manavgat a further 40 km, and notes that Serik's centre lies 8 km back from its own coast. That is the pattern the whole way: the road runs behind the resorts, and the turn down to the sea is the last part of the journey.

Can we visit the ancient theatre in the evening?

Yes. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism gives Side Theatre as open every day of the year from 08:00, with day tickets sold until 18:45 and night visits from 19:00 to 22:00, tickets until 21:30. It stands at the narrowest part of the peninsula with the temples of Apollo and Athena beside it, which is the view people come back for at sunset.
