When not to book us: Alvor is a two-ticket journey by scheduled transport and a one-ticket journey by car, and that is the whole argument. The airport coach will take you to Portimao for 14 euros or Lagoa for 13, both in reach, but neither is Alvor: the village sits about 6 km west of Portimao terminal, and the service that actually calls there is line 51, the coastal run between Albufeira and Lagos. Connecting the two is perfectly possible, costs a second banded fare and, on the morning pattern, adds another 39 minutes from Lagoa. Do it if you are travelling alone in daylight in summer and the timings line up, because it is still much cheaper than a car. Do not do it with a party, with hold luggage, or on a flight that lands in the evening, when the westbound coaches have thinned out and the connection you were relying on is the last one. Alvor itself is an old fishing village with lanes built before cars, so the drop is a matter of knowing which end of the street to approach from, and one fixed fare with the toll already inside it removes both the changeover and the guesswork.

  1. Book to the street, not to Alvor. The old village lanes between the church and the quay are narrow and part-pedestrian, and the apartments out towards Praia dos Tres Irmaos and Torralta are a different approach again.
