When not to book us: Châtel is the most interesting routing problem in this set, because it sits on the border and has two entirely different approaches. Through France you leave the motorway at Annemasse, run along to Thonon and climb the Vallée d'Abondance. Through Switzerland you stay on the Swiss motorway to Monthey, take the Portes du Soleil exit and come over Morgins. A driver picks between them on the day, and that choice is worth more on a February Saturday than any fare comparison. The resort publishes no direct scheduled coach from the airport, so the cheap route is a rail one, and for one or two people it is genuinely cheaper: the Léman Express from the airport to Thonon and then the regular line 12 bus, or a Swiss train every half hour from the airport to Aigle. Either way you finish with a road leg of some size, the 40 kilometres the tourist office gives from Thonon or the climb over Morgins, so budget for that rather than treating the station as the destination. The booked car makes its case on the last leg and on party size. A metered rank car is on Tarif II from the airport at 3,80 francs a kilometre because the destination is outside the canton, with waiting charged at 60,00 francs an hour if the road is slow, and the resort itself says winter tyres or chains are compulsory from the first of November to the thirty-first of March.
Where you meet your driver
- Give the chalet name and the hamlet. Châtel runs along the valley towards the Swiss border and the addresses at the Morgins end are a long way from the village centre.
- Come out to the Arrivals level and call your driver as soon as you land. The number is in the supplier details email rather than the booking confirmation.
- Carry your passport or identity card in the cabin bag rather than the hold. The Swiss approach through Monthey and Morgins crosses the border on a mountain road, and the French approach crosses it near Geneva.
- Express pick-up is included in what you paid, with the driver at the airport's designated pick-up point. Meet and greet in the arrivals hall with a name board is a paid extra at checkout.
- From November to March the vehicle is fitted with winter tyres or carrying chains, as the resort and French law both require, which on the Vallee d'Abondance climb is not a formality.
Contact your driver as soon as you land, their number is in your supplier details email.
Arrivals-hall meet and greet with a name board is available as a paid extra at checkout.
Châtel to Geneva Airport
The return direction is quoted separately, because the two legs can be won by different operators. It is currently from £180.49 for a saloon.
Questions people ask about this route
How much is a taxi from Geneva Airport to Châtel?
Our price is quoted live above and fixed when you book. A rank car is metered on Tarif II at 3,80 francs a kilometre, the tariff for journeys bound outside the canton and for parties of more than three, plus a 7,80 franc airport pick-up charge, with waiting time at 60,00 francs an hour if the road is slow.
How long is the transfer from Geneva to Châtel?
The tourist office gives 1 hour 40 minutes from Geneva international airport. Its own page puts the resort about 70 km from Geneva and 40 km from Thonon-les-Bains, while the quote above measures the road our driver takes to the address you give us, which is the longer of the two. Which approach is faster depends on the day, and that is one of the few places where local knowledge changes the arrival time rather than the route description.
Do we go through France or Switzerland?
Either. From France you leave the motorway at Annemasse, continue to Thonon and follow the Vallée d'Abondance. From Switzerland you leave the motorway at Monthey on the Portes du Soleil exit and come over Morgins. Both are published by the resort and both end in Châtel.
Is there a train to Châtel?
Not into the resort, and there is no direct coach from the airport either. The nearest French stations are Thonon-les-Bains and Evian-les-Bains, 40 km away, with a daily Léman Express service from Geneva airport to Thonon and then the regular line 12 bus up the valley. On the Swiss side there is a train every half hour from the airport to Aigle, which leaves you a road transfer over Morgins.
Do I need my passport for the transfer?
Carry photographic identification where you can reach it. The journey crosses the French and Swiss border whichever approach the driver takes, and the Morgins crossing is a small mountain road rather than a motorway post.
Are winter tyres or chains required?
Yes. The resort states that it is compulsory to fit winter tyres or carry chains in the boot from 1 November to 31 March, and French law says the same for the listed mountain communes, requiring either anti-skid devices for two drive wheels or four winter tyres on any vehicle with four or more wheels.
Can we be taken to Morgins or Avoriaz instead?
Yes, but quote the actual destination when you book rather than changing it on the day. Châtel, Morgins and Avoriaz are all in the Portes du Soleil but they are on different roads and in two countries, and the fare is fixed against the address you gave us.
How many of us fit in one vehicle?
A saloon carries three passengers and three standard suitcases, an estate four passengers, a people carrier five, and the largest vehicle we quote eight. Ski bags count as luggage, and on a cross-border run like this one an overloaded boot is the thing most likely to cost you a second car. Child seats are available on request.
What if our flight is delayed?
We track it and move the pick-up to the real landing time at no extra charge, and the free waiting window included in your fare starts when the aircraft lands. Book for the scheduled arrival rather than padding it.
How do we pay, and what if we cancel?
Payment is online by card at the time of booking and covers the whole vehicle rather than the seat count. Cancel more than 24 hours before pick-up and nothing is charged; inside 24 hours the fare is payable in full.
